Frequently Asked Questions
Community internships have two main application periods in the fall and spring, and students apply to positions on the Handshake platform. Positions have differing requirements, so students should thoroughly read the job description before applying.
Community internships are often competitive, with popular roles receiving larger applicant pools. Therefore, internships are not guaranteed. Students should work with the CDO to ensure they have strong application materials and are prepared to interview if a partner extends an interview invitation.
Before accepting an internship offer, students should carefully consider course load, availability, and prior obligations. This is an internship experience and should be accounted for in workload, as noted in the Student Agreement. Most internships require 5-10 hours of weekly work.
If you cannot fulfill the internship expectations or are no longer interested in the role, the CDO encourages you to briefly communicate with the partner and graciously decline. This allows other Kenyon applicants the opportunity to interview.
Internships are marked on Handshake whether they are paid or unpaid. Additional information related to partial remote work options, expected hours of work and other requirements for hiring are also contained in the job descriptions — review positions and commitments before applying.
Many internship sites are located along, or a short distance from KAT shuttle line stops — some roles offer aspects of remote work as well. If the role requires the consistent usage of personal transportation to the site, it will be noted in the position description.
If the position is listed for multiple semesters (ex: fall and spring), the intern may be asked to stay on for the following semester, provided mutual agreement and availability.
