Student drivers concerned about finding a place to park on campus have some help coming this fall, including increased overnight access to surface lots.
For registered vehicles, lots reserved for staff and faculty parking at most buildings will be open to students for more hours this year. On weeknights, that means student parking will be available from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m., instead of 5 p.m. until 2 a.m. And on weekends, students can park from 7 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday.
There are a few exceptions: Allen House, Chapel Circle, Farr Hall, Gund Commons, Sparrow House, the West Quad Garage and Woollam House.
The overall impact for students should be significant, according to Director of Campus Safety Michael Sweazey.
“That increases the amount of places they can park on campus at night by a lot,” Sweazey said. “They just need to remember to set their alarm to move it in the morning.”
Also popping up on campus are more signs indicating 15-minute loading zones. These have been added for those who may be just dropping off groceries or other items to their rooms.
Other changes to parking regulations include revised penalties for violations that are intended, in part, to discourage people from parking in the wrong student lots. Feedback from students revealed many instances when spots in their assigned parking lot were unavailable because vehicles assigned to other lots were taking their spaces, Sweazey said.
