President Decatur Shares Moniker Finalists

Date

Over the past two months, more than 1,800 members of our Kenyon community have voiced their opinions about our monikers, the Lords and Ladies. This passion is a testament to the lifelong bonds formed at and with Kenyon, as well as the sense of connection maintained throughout years and distance, which requires no label.

As has been noted, our names were not chosen deliberatively or bestowed formally, but rather, like many noteworthy achievements at Kenyon, born of a student’s creativity — in this case, in the pages of the Collegian. Lords and, eventually, Ladies, have been worn by many competitors throughout the years, often with immense pride. We have heard this pride from athletes and alumni who have built community under these names, solidified by their athletic accomplishments and a sense of family that crosses generations.

Yet an overwhelming desire to honor all the members of our community, this extended Kenyon family, now drives the push for change. A majority of those who participated in this process — 64% across the Kenyon community — support a change. A subcommittee, including Campus Senate members, students, and members of the athletics, advancement and communications staff, has weighed this support, as well as my original charge to evaluate whether Lords and Ladies are reflective of Kenyon today. The committee decided that the time has come to make a more conscious choice for our future, together.

The fact remains, the names Lords and Ladies do not make space for everyone now at Kenyon or those who may choose to come here in the future. Our values speak of “embracing differences; kindness, respect and integrity;” to continue to use names that do not acknowledge these differences is not, in our shared judgment, the best expression of our values.

In moving forward, we acknowledge that such change may not be easy, but the subcommittee felt, and I agree, that it is the right thing for Kenyon today and going forward to call ourselves by a name that makes clear there is a place for everyone here.

Thank you to those who shared their thoughts and suggestions, which evinced your boundless creativity and continued passion for Kenyon. Thank you to the co-chairs of the Campus Senate for raising this important question and pushing to see it answered. Thank you all for the vital role you play in our community.

As a reminder, your unique voting link will remain open until May 2. I invite you to read the rationale for each option before submitting your ranking.

I look forward to seeing the results.
