WeVideo is a web-based video editor that we subscribe to and support. Faculty may request WeVideo licenses for themselves and for any classes that utilize video projects as a means to course credit. Student accounts will be maintained until the student leaves the College. Requests can be made to Ashley at butler1@kenyon.edu.
Perks of using a web-based video editor:
- Is the same platform for everyone in classes who may have students using multiple operating systems (Mac/PC) and is also easily accessible via public computing machines available on campus.
- No download required, which is great for older machines
- Collaborative! WeVideo is one of the only video editors that has real-time collaborative qualities. Multiple people can be working on the video timeline at the same time. This is a great solution for group video projects.
- Updates are seamlessly implemented - everyone will be using the same version, always.
Drawbacks of Using WeVideo:
- Because it is web-based, you are at the mercy of your internet connection.
- You have no way of downloading or storing progress/project files locally for editing later--everything lives on WeVideo's server.
- Sometimes functions like screen-capturing or narration recording can be buggy because, again, you're at the mercy of your internet connection. It's best to use alternative recording functions if your recordings are longer than a couple of minutes.
- Updates happen automatically and for an infrequent user, you could have to relearn functionality with new updates.
