At Kenyon College, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive campus environment for all members of our community. The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is taking a bold step forward by moving beyond traditional safe space training and developing our own allyship curriculum. Our program places a strong emphasis on trauma-informed care and education, providing a unique and holistic approach to allyship that sets us apart.
Why the change? Our motivation behind this shift in framing is simple: we want to create a more transparent and realistic allyship program that truly impacts the culture at Kenyon. We understand that simply designating safe spaces on campus is not enough to ensure the genuine safety and support of LGBTQ+ students and other marginalized communities. In fact, this approach can sometimes create a false sense of security rather than fostering real cultural change.
In transitioning from the traditional safe space model to trauma-informed allyship, we are sending a clear message: allyship is not a one-time event; it is an ongoing journey of learning and growth that all members of our institution must embark on. We believe that this evolution in our approach will lead to more meaningful and lasting change within our community.
Our Allyship Training Program is designed to empower individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to become effective allies. We provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of trauma-informed care, equipping them to support and uplift marginalized voices in a way that respects their experiences and needs.
