Studying Studio Art at Kenyon
A faculty of active artists guide students as they discover new media, explore new techniques and perfect their own artistic expressions. Students create art in Horvitz Hall, which offers three floors of state-of-the-art studio and exhibition spaces — from the light-filled painting studio to the photography and sculpture wings. Senior art students exhibit their work in the Gund Gallery, Kenyon’s contemporary art museum.

Featured Courses
Back to the Drawing Board
Drawing and its potential as a tool for understanding, invention and change are as vital to new ways of thinking about art as they are to communication, transportation, work and dwelling space. This course incorporates techniques of observational drawing, design of objects, architectural and interior design, and conceptual design.
Still/Moving: Stop-Motion Animation
Experimental artists and filmmakers use stop-motion animation to create actions that could not be presented through real-time film. In this course, you will manipulate materials from paper to found objects, create innovative contexts for movement, integrate live video and sound recording, and experiment with the structure of time.
Film and Darkroom Photography
Beginning with an emphasis on mastering technical procedures, and evolving into an investigation of the creative possibilities of making images, this course provides an introduction to black and white silver-based photography. In the darkroom we will experiment with film exposure and processing times, the use of contrast filters, and printing using chemical methods.
Sculpture I
The sculpture studios in Horvitz Hall, complete with woodshop, machinery and tools are home to this hands-on introduction to three-dimensional art through an exploration of its basic elements and ordering principles. This course exposes students to a wide range of sculptural techniques including figurative modeling and digital fabrication.
Kenyon awards scholarships of $15,000 per year, renewable every year, for exemplary ability in studio art.
