Our conversations highlighted that data literacy—an understanding of how data is intertwined with the human experience—is a truly interdisciplinary skill that should be part of our students’ Kenyon experience. Today, information is more accessible than ever, which can create the false impression that data exists independently from the people who generate and interpret it. This pathway would address essential topics such as basic statistics, data literacy, qualitative and quantitative data collection, storytelling with data, and the role of data in the fine arts. We believe students should understand that data is created and shaped by people, and be prepared to engage critically with it in their coursework, in the news, in their future careers, and beyond.
